The Luke Somerfield Memorial Trust is a charity which has been formed to honour the memory of Luke, who died tragically at Cilyrchen Quarry on June 6th 2012. He was 14 years old and a pupil at Ysgol Tre-Gib near Llandeilo.

Luke's parents were David and Kim Somerfield and Luke was their only child. Although they are both devastated by what happened, they are determined that something positive should come out of this and to that end have formed this charity.

The Trustees are David Somerfield, Sian Heard (a solicitor based in London with a house in Llangadog), Peregrine Banbury, a London banker whose home has been in Ferryside for over 20 years and Carol Banbury, who is also the Trust Secretary. Kim Somerfield is the Trust's Local Fund Raiser. All Trustees and helpers are giving their services free of charge.

The Trust has as its specific objectives the advancement in life of young people up to the age of 18, living in Carmarthenshire by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of:

  • Advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals

  • Advancing education

  • Relieving unemployment

  • Providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people up to the age of 18 living in the area of benefit

Teaching water safety awareness and potential life saving skills

With these aims in mind, in the summer of 2013, we are planning to send 12 pupils and one teacher from Tre-Gib School to the Outward Bound Centre in Aberdovey for eight days. We believe the Outward Bound experience will be very beneficial to youngsters who would not normally be able to go on such courses and we know that, for some children, they can be a life changing experience.

We are also funding Water Awareness Courses for children in Carmarthenshire. Hopefully this may be instrumental in preventing another tragedy such as Luke's from happening.

Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death in 11-18 year olds and statistics show that most of the people in this age group can swim, so the courses aren't meant to make the participants stronger swimmers, but are a way of teaching people to recognise danger and equipping them with the knowledge to know what to do, or not to do in an emergency .

We are proud to have raised enough to make this possible for the current year and are hoping in time to be able to support other schools throughout Carmarthenshire.

We will work tirelessly to raise enough funds to achieve this. We have very recently been given corporate support to send approximately 100 children on the water safety awareness course for the next three years.

As a very new charity we would be enormously grateful for any support.
