After completing my Psychology Degree with Honours, I trained with the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy where I gained a Diploma and eventually became a full member and supervisor. I also incorporate additional skills learnt through passing a two-year Masters Degree in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). These skills used in combination or separately have enabled me to provide a well-rounded professional service to clients in a holistic and compassionate way that is both highly effective, practical and drugs free. I now work in private practice specialising in Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Pain Management, Phobias, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Stress Management. I am also a member of the Register of Approved Gastrointestinal Psychotherapists and Hypnotherapists and have been fully trained in the gut-directed approach to relieving Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). I have previously worked in addiction clinics covering a range of treatments for addiction, eating disorders, depression, anger, jealousy and personality disorders and for a mental health charity specialising in helping clients come off and stay off their prescribed medication for anxiety and depression.
A Brief History Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is an approach to counselling and psychotherapy that falls within the cognitive-behavioural therapeutic tradition (CBT). In fact, REBT is generally recognised as the first CBT approach. Its founder, Albert Ellis, originated REBT in 1955 and he continues to practice in New York at the Albert Ellis Institute. REBT/CBT is usefully applied to all problems in all settings (clinical and non-clinical) and is predominately used in hospital settings where therapy is usually fairly brief. REBT holds the view that thoughts (including imaginary), emotions and behaviours are all interdependent yet interacting psychological processes. Thus if a person holds rational beliefs about an event that has happened to them (or may happen) they will tend to experience helpful emotions such as concern or sadness. They will also behave in problem solving ways to find a solution to their problems. If, on the other hand, a person holds irrational beliefs about an event (or possible event) they will tend to experience unhelpful emotions such as anxiety or depression. They will also behave in ways that may be unhelpful to the solution of their problems.
REBT is a structured, active-directive therapy where
the client and therapist collaborate by explicitly setting out steps towards
achieving the client’s realistic goals. Therapists encourage their
clients to be specific about their problems and desired outcomes and then
help them to become aware of the long-term consequences of holding particular
negative thought patterns and behaviours. Therapists encourage a process
of change through increased self-awareness and personal choice. REBT requires
self-responsibility and a determination and willingness to change. Clients
are encouraged to perform tasks and practice new skills developed in the
session and become responsible for improving their own quality of life.
This therapy requires more discipline and work than hypnotherapy but once
learnt clients can use the principles to overcome any future problems
they encounter, thereby becoming their own therapist. A medical history will be taken along with a full account of the presenting problem/s and the desired goals. After confirming the details the therapist will present a case formulation and recommendation to the client for approval or discussion. Treatment approach, possible duration and cost will also be discussed. Any questions or reservations will also be addressed at this initial stage. Therapy usually begins from this first initial consultation and clients often leave with tasks to complete between sessions.
