FABRICE, APPROACHING AT A GALLOP, PULLS HIS HORSE UP BESIDE A GROUP OF SOLDIERS

1. FABRICE:

I have come to fight for the Emperor!

2. SOLDIER:

Nice horse.

3. FABRICE:

I shall lay my sword at his feet and I … hang on a minute, what d’you think you’re …

FX

REARING, SCUFFLING, NEIGHING. VIOLENT THUMP. A GROUP OF HORSES GALLOPS AWAY INTO THE DISTANCE.

4. FABRICE:

(ON THE GROUND) Come back with that horse!

SC 2 FR. BLANÈS’ BELFRY

1. BLANÈS:

“The children of this world are wiser in their generation than the Children of Light”. Matthew, was it, or Luke? One of the apostles. Not much to choose between that and the age of reason, really. “Theology breaks down here, get on with it yourselves.” Astrology’s no better. But it’s interesting. Well, they both are. And the reason they’re interesting is that they defy Reason. Neat, eh? (SUDDEN INSPIRATION) No, wait, I can take this one further … no, I can’t … yes, I can! They are, moreover, not of this world. (DELIGHTED PAUSE) Play on words. Well, extension of metaphor. (DOESN’T SOUND RIGHT) Literary conceit. BEAT The point is – and, mark my words, Fabrice, there is always a point – that theology and astrology and philosophy are all very well in a belfry. But they’re not worth their wages at court. What do they deal with? Life and Death. What matters in the real world? Power and Wealth. Speculation, exploitation, fornication, marriages, alliances, Conspiracies and plots. Who’s where, when, why and with what compromising letter down his trousers. Heady stuff, they tell me. Can’t see it myself.

SC 3 THE FIELD OF WATERLOO

CANNONADE, BEATING DRUMS, SCREAMING HORSES, CURSING MEN. HOLD UNDER AS A PLATOON ON HORSEBACK GALLOPS TOWARDS FABRICE.

1. FABRICE:

(SHOUTS) Excuse me!

FX

THE PLATOON PASSES FABRICE AND FADES INTO THE DISTANCE. THE CHAOS AROUND HIM CONTINUES.

2. FABRICE:

(SHOUTS) Is this a battle?
