Song

Worksong
for Linda
The
King of Spain’s daughter was walking on the shore.
Came the queen’s husband riding on his horse.
Who saw the princess?
He
wrapped her in a sealskin, he took her to the hall.
She bore him seven children, she fed and nursed them all.
Who saw the princess?
She
combed his beard of silver, she washed his hair of gold,
She baked him cakes of barley, she brewed him vats of ale.
Who saw the princess?
Her
mother came at midnight and found them in the room,
She took a stone and killed her and threw her in the well.
Who saw the princess?

PAUL
LETS GO OF KAY’S HAND AND SITS DOWN NERVOUSLY.
LONG, AKWARD PAUSE. |

I

(CASTING
A DESPERATE LOOK AT THE BEDROOM DOOR)
Of course. |
KAY |

And
she was beautiful, you know? She had this lovely hair. When
people die you should have all these memories. I made her napkin
rings. She liked them. |
PAUL |
 |
I’m
sure. |
KAY |
 |
In
hospital they didn’t wash her hair. |

When
d’you expect your brother? |
KAY |

When
I was five I had this friend called Sarah Franklin. Her mother
had an Audi. One day my mum came to collect me. And when she
came she had this awful lipstick. It was pale, like white.
She looked revolting. And Sarah Franklin laughed.
SHE
LOOKS INTENTLY AT PAUL, WHO REGISTERS POLITE INTEREST |
KAY |

I
never told my mum. She’d laugh if she could hear this.
I never told her what I said. I said that’s not my mother.
That’s the Avon lady.
