Summer Meeting in Anglesey : July 9th – 14th
The Summer Meeting this year will cover the prehistory and history of Anglesey, visiting some 37 sites in the course of our six days on the island. Anglesey has many exceptionally well-known monuments and historic sites, the megalithic tombs of Bryn Celli Ddu and Barclodiad y Gawres, the Iron Age lake sanctuary of Llyn Cerrig Bach, notable Early Christian monuments, the only excavated court of the Princes of Gwynedd and what is judged to be the most perfectly designed of Edward I’s castles. Later sites include the remains of what was once the most important copper mine in the world and its related port, and the great naval port of Holyhead. We will visit 7 churches and will get to a number of sites which are not normally open to the public. Many Cambrians may have already visited these sites but it is planned to emphasise those where there is new information from excavation, or new interpretations to be discussed. People may find Mick Sharp’s recent book of photographs (with captions by FML) Anglesey: Past Landscapes of the Coast (Oxbow Books) a useful guide and attractive memento.
The meeting will be based at the new Bangor University Halls of Residence at the Ffriddoedd Site in Upper Bangor where all the rooms are singles, en suite with showers, grouped in clusters with their own kitchen facilities. Our meals will be taken in Bar Uno close by on the campus, so the kitchen is only needed for cups of tea and ironing. Evening lectures etc will be held on the same campus. The cost will be £43.50 DBB per person per night. Those who book will receive a map of the site in advance and should arrange to arrive in Bangor in time for lunch (Bar Uno will be open). The meeting will end at about 1.00pm on the Saturday but members without long journeys may like to visit the Llyn Cerrig Bach Exhibition at Oriel Môn in Llangefni or Gwynedd Museum in Bangor which holds a lot of Anglesey material.
