Autumn Meeting in Birmingham : September 21st – 23rd
This autumn weekend will be based on The Thistle Hotel in the centre of Birmingham and will start on the afternoon of Friday 21st with a visit (by bus) to the village of King’s Norton to see some of the traditional West Midlands timber buildings and to briefly look at Bourneville. In the evening we will have a lecture on the great hoard of Saxon treasure from Staffordshire and the following morning we will see it in the Birmingham City Museum, before going to the Jewellery Quarter to see the preserved jewellery factory and the newly-saved Evans Silverworks. This visit will be entirely on foot and by train, as will the following Sunday morning when we will be guided around the central Civic buildings and the Canal Basin (all of which is a pedestrian area). In the afternoon we will go by bus to Soho House Museum, the home of Matthew Boulton, the 18th century business pioneer, builder of steam engines, maker of ormolu and founder of the Lunar Society (see Jenny Uglow The Lunar Men) after which we will visit Handsworth Parish Church to see their memorials and return to the hotel at c.5.00pm.

The hotel is situated on the inner ring road just opposite St Chad’s Catholic Cathedral, about 15 minutes walk from New Street Station, 5 mins from Snow Hill Station and 10 mins from the Civic centre. There is an NCP car park immediately behind the hotel (25% discount on £20 a day charge).
Cost : Nights of Sept 21-22: Single room £65 DBB; Single occupying double room £75.00 DBB and Double occupancy £95.00 (ie £47 each) DBB. Lunch can be bought at the bar on arrival.

2.00pm bus to Kings Norton
Kings Norton: Tudor house (Saracen’s Head) and Grammar School. Selly Manor and view of Bourneville. Tea, talk and tour of Govern Hall and Selly Manor

Saturday
9.50 am Walk to museum 10 mins

Train to Jewellery Quarter from Snow Hill (close to Museum)
Museum of Jewellery Quarter (OAP £3.00) (tour 45-60mins + c. 30 mins for galleries) and Evans Silver Works (EH £7.50) Divide into 4 groups (A&B separated by 10 mins / C&D similar, switch between JQM and ESW
Lunch: Find own in Jewellery Quarter between visits to JQM and ESW
Visit other JQ attractions at will.
Return to hotel by train Snow Hill, 5 mins walk from hotel
Dinner : Hotel c. 7.00pm

Sunday
Services at St Chad’s Cathedral and St Phillips at 9.00am
10.00am Architectural tour of Civic Centre with Nick Molyneux including the Gas Street Basin and other canals.

Return to Hotel 1.30 pm for bus to Soho House Museum
Visit Soho House Museum (Matthew Boulton’s home)
Bus to Handsworth Church and Boulton, Watt etc memorials
Return to hotel for 5.00pm
