Statement
A Combination of Opposites
I want my work to have vitality of its own, not necessarily representational, or concerned
with movement, but energy; in some circumstances calm and intense, independent of the image and a little abstract.
Drawing and painting life models shows me the correlation in form and rhythm also found in land and seascape.
Oil paint! its power, its texture, its materiality sources my adrenalin and painting with palette knife, dictates
I loosen up and trust in chance!
Image and paint are essential equals to get "whatever that feeling is that makes me feel I have to paint."
Dimension and quality of colour play their part; idea and technique being one and the same. An inner and outer
response pinned on canvas!
Indifferent natural forces, colossal energy, sweeping light and storms shape limestoned Wales and Cornwall's
ancient granite coastline where I "practice my craft and sullen art"*
