Abercamlais is a small family run stud of Welsh Mountain Ponies and Section D bred for quality, temperament, type, conformation and performance, which we run as a hobby (albeit a very expensive one) alongside our busy work and family commitments.

After years of owning and breeding large horses, one of Jane's ambitions was to own a Section A stallion. The opportunity came after a chance meeting on the road with John Roberts of Nantlais Stud and the offer to see a little colt born hours beforehand - it was love at first sight! Many hours of persuasion (and liquid refreshment) resulted in the purchase our first colt foal “Nantlais Bonheddwr Charlie” the start of our small herd. Charlie was gelded as a five year old after leaving us a son Nedd, and is doing extremely well as a lead rein pony.

Our foundation mares came from Pwlle, Vimpenny, Gleniant, Rookery Studs and not forgetting Hillmead Dana, the mother of our beautiful mare Abercamlais Deryn who is by the equally stunning Baledon Ultra. Deryn, broken last May had a great first season under saddle with the David Thomas Show Team as a lead rein pony, ridden by David and Shereen’s daughter, Tori. This year she has progressed to the First Ridden classes with Tori’s older sister Georgia riding and is making her mark as a true child’s first ridden pony. Not only has she won a number of Novice and Open first ridden classes and championships already this season but on the 22nd May 2011 won her RIHS ticket at her first attempt! We are absolutely thrilled and cannot thank the Thomas family enough for the hard work and dedication they give to the ponies.

After covering mares last season Abercamlais Nedd has also been gelded and is being produced by the Thomas family. Winning his first BSPS SHP Lead rein class and taking the SHP Champion after only being broken a few weeks! We have very high hopes for Nedd who has also left us with some lovely foals.

We feel privileged to now have Pwlle Ann, not a replacement for Natur who we tragically lost, but to carry on the bloodlines of the true hill pony. Ann or Annie as she is known, is a Smokey Perlino by Pwlle Pippin. We are very grateful to Mr and Mrs Jones and Nerys for allowing us to have Annie. This year she has produced her first foal a beautiful palomino filly, Abercamlais Megan.

A special mention goes to our big boy “Glynglas Bonheddwr” or Merlyn as he is known at home. Bought as a foal after his mother died of bracken poisoning shortly after birth, Martin reared and broke him himself. He is a delight to own, his temperament is second to none. He has hunted, shown with success under saddle (front line of the Royal Welsh on the two occasions he has been shown) and produced some lovely foals. This year’s foal out of Tirygelli Mia is a beautiful bay filly. He is traditional, as you will see from his pictures standing at 14.3 ¾ hh.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped us, listened to us and advised us.

Diolch yn Fawr.
